I'm hoping to snag a good deal on a monitor during black friday/cyber monday, problem is, I have no idea what I need.

I have a 2 monitor set up right now, both 24", just need something a bit bigger to play games on so I'm thinking 27" or bigger if budget allows. I don't plan on playing games across all 3 monitors, I'll use the 27", or whatever size I get, to play games on and use the other 2 for web browsing/music/twitch/etc.

My specs:
GPU - GTX 980Ti 6GB
CPU - i5-3570k @ 4GHz with CM Hyper 212 Evo
RAM - 16GB G.Skill Ares
PSU - XFX Pro 750W XXX
Mobo - ASRock Z77 Extreme 4

I play a variety of games, CS:GO, Smite, Overwatch, Fallout 4, Assassin's Creed games, Battlefront, etc.

I'm just not sure what to get, a 1440p monitor, or stick with 1080 and go with 144Hz refresh rate...

Oh and for my budget, I'd like to stay as low as possible, but willing to spend $500 or so.

Thanks!
Kev

If you want to go up to 27", I'd suggest 1440p as your 980ti will handle it nicely.

If you can stretch to $599, then the Acer Predator XB270HU is the second best TN gaming monitor you can currently get, as it has the following specs:

- 144hz
- 1ms response time (GTG)
- G-Sync
- 2560x1440p

It is second only to the Asus ROG Swift PG278Q.

EDIT: Just found a deal on the Swift: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236405R&cm_re=asus_rog_swift-_-24-236-405R-_-Product

I'd go for that. It's marked as 'unboxed' which means the packaging has been opened by the Newegg staff before, probably to put it on display or to show a picky customer who wanted to see it before they buy it. I'd say its worth it, as it will be in absolutely perfect condition.

The open box ROG Swift is already sold :( Just a bit out of my price range, though I'll keep my eye on it for the upcoming sales.

I was looking at this monitor, it's more in line with what I'd be comfortable spending, as I'm wanting to get a new keyboard as well.

It's $399 on amazon at the moment, would that be a good choice? and would it be safe to overclock it to around 75hz? I've read mixed opinions on overclocking monitors.

I think I've narrowed my choices down to these 2 monitors, and possibly a 3rd, depending on feedback I get here.

1st: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009C3M7H0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2HIGQA9YX2FRR&coliid=I3VLA0468WVQ5W
2nd: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYCSRSG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2HIGQA9YX2FRR&coliid=I2CBE41FT74UMD&psc=1

and this one I'm kind of iffy on, really wanting to go with an IPS panel as I've heard lots of good things

Does anyone have any experience with either of the first 2 monitors and overclocking? Would I be better off just going with the 3rd option for the 144hz refresh rate?

So many decisions, I can't decide! :(

Id go for either 1, or 3.

As for deciding, it comes down to this: What do you regard as more important?

1) Still image quality
2) Moving image quality.

The ASUS with the IPS panel will give you superior image quality, due to its more impressive colour reproduction and accuracy. However, be prepared for IPS glow which can make it hard to play dark games like The Witcher 3, Metro, Alien: Islotation etc as the black areas will seem to emit a lot of light.

The 144hz BenQ on the other hand will have ok but not great colours and contrast, but will excel at moving images due to that high refresh rate. I was VERY skeptical when I was considering a 144hz monitor; I couldn't imagine how you could make 60fps look smoother. Turns out, I was VERY wrong to think that. I don't think I can go back to 60hz anymore.

Based on the above, I'd say that for gaming, 144hz > IPS. But its whatever you think is more important to you.
