what is the best way to backup all files and programs in windows 10

I previously transferred all files on a windows 7 computer to a surface pro running windows 10. Using the windows 10 backup feature, I felt assured that if I needed to restore my files after a mishap they would be there. Boy was I wrong!! I had to reset the computer because of malfunctioning peripherals and when I went to restore everything after the reset, no more than ten percent of my files were there! Of course I just went back to using my old computer running windows 7.

You could conversely look into third party software to backup your data and there is the option to manually move important things over to a drive but who has time for that?

Mind you, make sure you backup your critical data on an external storage device that is locked away and taken out in case of emergency(literally).
