When I hook up my HDMI cable to my TV, all I see is the desktop background. Help appreciated!!!

I have some problems.
iI bought the hdmi cord, and when i plug it in, all I see is the desktop Background.

Two possibilities:
1) You are extending the desktop (the proper way to use multiple monitors actually). Simply press Windows Key+P and select one of the other options (clone makes both screens show the same thing, projector only will only show stuff on the TV)
2) Overscan is cutting off the task bar and other things. Change your TV's picture size to "do not overscan", "dot-by-dot", "1:1" etc
