display driver update causes a black screen with only the curser showing

It installs the driver and tells me to restart. When I restart I get a black screen and are unable to do anything.To try and fix the problem I did a system restore to an earlier date but windows automatically installs this driver everytime and it causes the same problem so I'm back to square one.

I fixed it. I unplugged my Ethernet cable so my pc couldn't connect to the internet. Then using a separate computer I downloader the latest graphics driver for my gpu to a usb and used that to update my main pc. I then reconnected my computer to the pc and then restarted and voila, no more blackscreen.
