DVI-D vs HDMI vs VGA and differences

Hi,
The only thing my monitor has is vga, if I get a vga to dvi-d converter (r9 290) is that the performance of the vga or dvi-d? Also I plugged in a vga to hdmi converter and randomly when playing video games the screen flicker/turns off and goes into power saving mode. Do you know why? And should I use a vga to hdmi converter or a vga to dvi-d?

VGA on monitor means that it is only Analog, most cards have at least one DVI-I port that carries analog signal on top of Digital so what you need is a DVI-i to VGA dongle http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA67038S9777&cm_re=dvi_to_vga-_-9SIA67038S9777-_-Product

If you look at the ports of the r9 290, http:// it shows that there is no dvi-i port on it. Can you link me to a good vga to dvi-d active adapter that will work well?

The lower connector in the picture is DVI-I has the 4 pin analog around the flat pin!

sorry I copied the wrong photo... This is the r9 290 that I have, http:// and in this photo there is no dvi-i slot just two dvi-d, an hdmi, and a display port.

Yep that is correct. I have newer used a DVI-D adapter but now for sure it has to be active to convert the digital signal to analog.
