Recently purchased MSI 980. Card comes with 1 HDMI, 4 displayports and 1 DVI. I have 2 monitors: one monitor only has DVI capabilities. The second, a much older monitor, has AGP, DVI and HDMI.

I would like to run both monitors at 2560x1600. The first monitor with the DVI only connection works fine at 2560x1600 while plugged into the DVI port on the card. The older monitor is stuck at 1920x1200 via HDMI. I've looked at dvi-displayport adapters and I'm not sure I fully grasp the capabilities and what would be the best choice at this point from both a practical standpoint and a financial. I've read that my only option is to buy a very expensive active DVI-displayport adapter (over $100) but I'm not sure if this is correct understanding. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It is most likely because the older monitor does not support HDMI 1.4+. It is possible to output 2560x1600 with HDMI provided they are revision 1.4+. Yep, active adapters are expensive. You cannot use a passive HDMI to Dual DVI adapter because HDMI will only throughput through a single DVI link.

Although, you could probably just buy something like this VisionTek adapter for ~$30. It does active displayport to Dual Link DVI adapter at resolutions up 2560x1600. I assume it works as advertised.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response. I had looked at that adapter last night but wasn't sure if that would do what it says and the reviews weren't glowing. I'll give it a whirl and report back in a few days once it gets here and I've tried it. Thanks again.
