Hi All,

As title states, I recently got a new 27" 1440p/144Hz monitor (Acer XG270HU) and would like to get a new GPU to take advantage of the higher res. I'm open to both Nvidia/AMD solutions, as even with Freesync off I don't really notice much tearing.

I'm currently running: i5-3570K (stock), GTX 660 2GB, EVGA 850 W G2 PSU. I'd like to find a GPU that allows me to run 1440p at High / Ultra 50-60 fps.

I really like the 980 ti but the high price tag is giving me hesitation. The next best alternative seems to be the R9 390, which on a good day is half the cost of the 980 ti.

However, the R9 390, seems like it is already bottlenecking at 1440p High/Ultra and I worry about its performance in a year or so.

So I'm basically having trouble deciding amongst following options:

(1) Buy nothing now. Wait until Pascal comes out or 980 ti goes on sale (But who knows how long it'll be before the Pascal 980 ti equivalent is out? And I doubt the 980 ti goes on sale any time soon for any significant cut)

(2) Get the R9 390 and save half the cost of the 980 Ti, upgrade in 1-2 years. (But will there even be a card at better than the performance level of a 980 Ti available at 250-300$ in 1-2 years? Only then would this option make sense)

(3) Bite the bullet and get the 980 ti now (I would be happy with this option if I could use it 4-5 years before upgrading again without having to significantly downgrade settings)

(4) Some other option that I am unaware of?

Any advice or knowledge you guys have is much appreciated!!!

Thanks for response guys---

ComputerSecurityGuy, could you elaborate please on why you would go with R9 Fury? I was under the impression that at its price/performance point it was about equivalent to the 980 non Ti, and in a place of limbo where it would just be better to go Fury X or 980 Ti.

Are you the kind of person who wants everything maxed out? then the 980 Ti or Fury X are good options.

If you are happy using optimized settings (i.e not everything maxed) then you can use something like a GTX 970 or R9 390. I use a GTX 780 on 1440p with no problems playing the latest games, i just use the geforce experience, let it set me the best settings for 1440p and I get great performance.

Buy the best you can afford.
