Can i connect a DVI monitor to a laptop with HDMI output??

I have an old Samsung Monitor which has DVI input and have a HP laptop that has an HDMI connector for connecting external displays the question I have now is,my monitor is currently connected by a VGA cable from the VGA port on the back to the VGA port on my Radeon HD5450 2 GB. My GPU has an HDMI,VGA,DVI ports for connectivity and my monitor has a VGA and DVI D port(I think see pic) can I buy a single DVI male to HDMI male and connect it for my laptop when my lap needs an external display and the GPU when using as a pc's main display? If not what cable should I buy? Are my monitor and GPU a DVI D Dual Link Female ports?
