Interface an external PC with a legacy 1992 mainframe manufacturing computer system

I work on these large machines that were built in 1992 and are used in manufacturing. The machines have a card cage which includes a cpu card, digital controller card, autofocus system card, vga card, motion controller card, etc.. (a few other control cards).
As of now, the system software is completely DOS based. It is not windows or Unix.
I would like to remove the CPU card and somehow interface an external PC instead of using the CPU card. Is this something that can be done, and how would I go about doing it?

It's likely possible, about HOW to do it you will need to talk to whoever maintains the system. There is no way you will get an answer to this on a forum, whoever does the work will need to know exactly what these systems are, the hardware and software they are running, what connectivity they have, etc...
