I am totally stuck on were to go next with my setup, i currently have the following spec computer and use it for gaming

Intel 5930k cpu
2 x Titan X palit gpu's
16gb (4 x 4GB) ddr4 3600mhz domintor ram
msi mpower mobo
1tb 2.5" ssd
256 2.5" ssd
128 m.2 ssd
850 watt power supply
Acer XB280HK monitor

Im stuck between the two monitors in the title but am open to other suggestions as to a good upgrade of monitor/s. the max i would spend is around £1000

Stay away from both. These monitors have poor quality control which is unacceptable for such a high price range (read their Amazon and NewEgg reviews). I'm curious why you are debating between two completely different monitors (the ASUS is a 144Hz G-Sync 4ms 1440p monitor, the Dell is bigger with a lot higher response time at 8ms and is 4K at 60Hz). That's two different categories of monitors.

the asus is 165hz and the dell is 5k @ 60hz, i know the dell is more geared for professional use rather than gaming but the resolution was attractive to me but i dont what better higher resolution or higher hz's/frames

Yep the newer PG279Q tops at 165Hz, but unless you expect to get 165fps at 1440p in games, it's more hype than function. Not sure where you are getting your 5K/60Hz info from regarding the Dell, but it's a moot point. Both of these monitors are not recommended for purchase currently for reasons mentioned.

Every gamer, me included, would recommend going with higher FPS at 1440p over higher resolution and lower frames at 4K. Always keep in mind you need to make sure your GPUs have the capability to run *minimum* frames per second at or above the screen refresh rate to prevent screen tearing issues.

For example, with my 970 SLI platform, I run my overclocked 1440p at 90Hz and cap the frames in V-sync in games to 90fps...smooth and fluid as melted butter. While they can run some games over 100fps, I notice if I do not cap the FPS that screen tearing occurs (the monitor refresh rate cannot keep up with the speed of the GPUs).

if you are looking for a decent 4k panel look up dream seller the korean panels they inspect and show you photos before shipping to you so you can be sure to get a perfect panel every time just purchased a 43 inch crossover 434k for $750 amd freesync 60hz 4k overclocks to 70hz no skipping or any issues I also have the pg279q and enjoy it since its my first 144hz display it will also overclock up to 150hz at 1080p and 1440p but skips frames at anything higher than 118 hz from my personal experience.
