Hello all,

I'm building my first pc which I'll use mainly for gaming. The parts list so far (excluding RAM) is;

CoolerMaster Cosmos SE case
Corsair RM850I psu
MSI Z170A M5 motherboard
Intel I5 6600K cpu
Corsair H110 GT water cooler
Sandisk Ultra II 120GB SSD for Operating System
Sandisk Ultra II 480GB for games
WD Black 1TB HDD for general storage

My question is; I've heard that I5 6600K is only compatible with DDR4 running at 2133. If this is the case, I presume getting anything faster than this is pointless as either it won't be compatable or it will just run at 2133 anyway. Is this right?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hello Cosmos Matt,

To be specific, the i5-6600k can support these RAM frequencies before overclock: DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V

AFTER overclock the 6600k can support higher RAM frequencies, so a pair of 2400Mhz for example are still completely viable for that CPU as long as your motherboard also supports it (the MSI above does).

It's true that in most applications you won't see a drastic increase in performance, but if you render video or work in graphic design the faster RAM would be a good choice as long as you're overclocking the CPU as well.
