I'm currently buying a new gaming rig and my monitor is a bit old, but it's still works fine (LG Flatron W1942S, resolution 1440x900) and i wonder if it will make any difference in overall video/picture quality.

There's a huge difference. DVI-I includes analog signals (they're the four holes surrounding the line), A cheap adapter will map those analog signals to the proper VGA wires, and you'll get "native" VGA output straight from the video card.

HDMI to VGA requires an active adapter, which maps the HDMI signal to a screen image, then converts that to analog for output on a D-Sub VGA connector. It's bulky, expensive, sometimes requires external power, and doesn't always work.
