High ping in CS:GO

Hey everyone!

I haven't been playing CS:GO for a few weeks, because of ping problems, and sometimes, packet loss. Basically, whenever I connect to any server, I get extremely high ping, around 300-500 ping, and I get a bit of choke. BUT sometimes I can't even connect to a server and I get a bunch of packet loss, also with messages in the console saying something about packet loss. If you need more info about the messages, I'll provide them. Also, I'm connected to the internet with an Ethernet cable, not wireless. Not sure if this is important, but I recently had drivers installed for a usb wifi dongle, but I was able to play CS:GO without lag after that. Any help is appreciated, and here are my specs if for any reason you need them:

Intel Pentium G3258

2GB PowerColour AMD R9 285

8GB RAM

128 GB SSD

2 TB HDD

AsRock B85M-DGS Anniversary Edition

NZXT Phantom 410

500 Watt power supply

Windows 10

So somehow you know how to run traceroute but don't know tor? That's definitely a first. Just think of tor as a VPN on steroids (with huge latency issues)

Here's two tests you should do:
1) ping (in command prompt) your router. If it's above 1ms on average you have issues, and you should run traceroute to see what's in the way.
2) ping google.com. If it's above ~25ms, you might have problems, and traceroute that too

If both of those are fine the issue is with your cs:go server selection and you should pick something else.

I did a trace route while connected to a Deathmatch server in the Command Prompt and it said something about over a maximum of 30 hops... Mean anything to you?

No VPN. What does tor stand for? Sorry I'm not too educated in computers.

Alright so like I mentioned before, I'm getting a bunch of corrupted packets while trying to connect to a server (I just realized that I said packet loss. I meant corrupt packets, I apologize for any confusion) which is preventing me from connecting to the server. This is happening more frequently now, and I'm starting to get really confused. I'll paste the console messages I'm getting:

192.69.97.40:27049:corrupted packet -2052411300 at 0

Alright so I just did a trace route on google.com. So after pinging google.com I was getting as high as 1722 ms but as low as 19. So I did a traceroute of google.com, and I'll just paste the results below. Also when I pinged my router, I got a 0ms average, which I'm assuming that the internet is fine?

Tracing route to google.com [209.52.189.84]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
2 17 ms 24 ms 16 ms 10.31.254.1
3 2641 ms 19 ms 19 ms plalca01ci01.bb.telus.com [75.154.217.78]
4 791 ms 1538 ms 19 ms cache.google.com [209.52.189.84]

Trace complete.

Ok.. Either you have a horrible ISP or you have a bad configuration from random stuff you installed or viruses. Try checking to see if any other computer/device has the same issue, if they don't, time to back up, reformat, and make sure you have proper anti-virus software before moving your old files back.

It looks like it's my ISP. I tried connecting to a DM server on a laptop and I still got the same messages that I got on my PC in the console. Should I just contact my ISP and tell them my problem?

Hey guys, thanks for helping me trying to fix my problem, I really do appreciate it. Turns out my father was uploading over 10,000 photos and videos to back them up and it kept failing. Hope you guys have a great new year!

Time to set up QoS for your router then ;) That way you can prioritize your games over those failed uploads
