Hi
I've just bought a used HP8300 Core i7 3770 with 8 gig DDR3 installed.
It turns out that it actually has 3 sticks installed as below,
1x 4Gig PC3-12800 (800MHZ) Elpida
1x 2Gig PC3-10700 (677Mhz) Nanya Tech
1x 2Gig PC3-10700 (677Mhz) Elpida
So I was thinking first action would be to dump the 2x 2Gig sticks and put in just an additional 1x 4Gig PC3-12800 so the memory will still be 8 Gig but can run at full speed and still be in dual channel mode (PC3-12800 is the fastest the M/B can do).
My question is - is this the right thing to do & would I gain much in performance by going up to 16 Gig (via 4x 4Gig PC3-12800)?
I have bought this PC for basic video editing and older gaming btw.
I'm well behind on gaming, up to now just playing BF2 & Supreme Commander 2 on my Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz.
I want to slowly catch up so BF3 & 4, Halo 2 onwards etc...
I don't want to push the envelope of gaming performance as that eats money.
Graphics card will most likely be a GTX950 when I get around to it (PSU issues with the HP8300 to sort out first).
Cheers, Rich.
