Long story short I've been on the Overclocking forums and a guy was helping me to try to OC my CPU, when I first applied an OC my system crashed while stress testing but upon reboot it displayed a message saying that ALL my BIOS settings have been restored to default, so there is the issue. I'm sure I've put all the BIOS settings back (I'm a BIOS noob) but now ever since then the boot time is like 25 seconds where it was more like 10 seconds before. Also now when it boots I see the black screen that has white writing on about 'press del to enter setup' etc and now I see the black Win 8 screen with the blue logo on it whereas before it booted so fast I did not see any of that, and now after the black Win 8 screen my monitors just go grey for about 5 seconds and nothing happens until it eventually boots, what is going on?

The mobo is an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 and I know for sure that I've:

Enabled MSI Fast Boot
Disabled full size splash screen
Enabled Windows Fast Boot
Enabled Rapid Start
And made sure my SSD is first in the boot list

I reset CMOS by pulling the battery as I couldn't locate the jumper, upon restart I got the 'all settings have been reset' message so assume the CMOS was reset OK. I then went to my BIOS and set the following:

Full screen logo - disabled
GO2BIOS - enabled
SATA mode - AHCI (was already set by default)
Intel rapid start - enabled
Windows 8 feature - enabled
MSI fast boot enabled (I had the choice of Windows Fast Boot or MSI Fast Boot, not sure which is best as they both take the same amount of time to boot)
XMP - enabled
Enhanced turbo - enabled
C-state - disabled

Rapid Mode is also enable on my SSD's software, but I assume that won't affect boot times.

But still my boot now takes 30 seconds (it used to take 10 seconds)

Here's a video, the black screen with white writing (press del to enter setup etc etc) has now ceased to display which I guess means I'm getting somewhere but still this is far slower than it used to be:

https://youtu.be/J0eecElrT74

Worth noting also that the debug LED on the mobo hovers on the numbers 39 & 40 at the same time that the boot seems to just stand still and not do anything, and of course neither are listed in the manual?

I found this on an ASUS forum, but not sure if codes are standardized across all motherboards?

39 - Post-Memory System Agent initialization (System Agent module specific)
40 - OEM post memory initialization codes

There is every chance that the LED is just reading the temp at this point though maybe?

Also just to add that black screen with white lettering IS actually still happening, just didn't happen when i recorded that video for some reason?

Here's how event viewer shows my last boot up, I don't really know what any of that means, all I know is Event Viewer has given my boot up a big yellow warning triangle:

Note these event viewer Boot warnings have only started appearing since the failed OC and subsequent crash yesterday

I've just ran an sfc /scannow from the cmd and even though it showed no errors, my boot time is now 10 seconds. Not quite sure how or why that helped but it has?

Can anyone help me with this at all?

I thought I'd try software OC'ing today to find some stability by using Intels Extreme Utility before apply the OC to the BIOS in the hope that when it does crash that my BIOS won't get wiped. Well it crashed, the BIOS did not get wiped and Intel Extreme Utility put my OC back to default settings (so far so good) BUT my boot time has quadrupled again and Event Viewer is showing the warning again :-(

I tried System Restoring back to yesterday when all was good, but still slow boot times so I tried the sfc /scannow that seemingly fixed it yesterday but today it's not helping and I'm stuck with the slow boot time?!

As it stands (takes 25-30secs):

Power on
Sometimes shows black screen with white writing (press del to enter setup ect) but sometimes skips this screen
Black screen with blue win logo
Black screen <---- this is where it hangs for 10-20secs
Windows starts

It used to do this (6 seconds total):
Power on
Black screen with blue Windows logo
Windows starts

ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED

Yeah I've re enabled anything fast boot related I can think of both within Windows and my BIOS.

Two things you maybe haven't tried, is to reload all your drivers in case the system is having trouble initializing a broken driver, and changing the boot screen timeout in msconfig from 30 to 3. You could also run a diagnostic start up and see if improves your speeds.

I have actually already set the time out to 3secs. Which drivers are you referring too, peripherals or motherboard? Not sure how to do a diagnostic startup but I'll have a Google and see what I can do.

Thanks I'll give that a go.

OK I've tried this also:

Windows 8/10 features ENABLED in BIOS
MSI Fast Boot disabled in BIOS
MSI Fast Boot off (Windows App)

Boot = 38 seconds

Windows 8/10 features DISABLED in BIOS
MSI Fast Boot disabled in BIOS
MSI Fast Boot off (Windows App)

Boot = 16 seconds

Ideally the next logical step would be to DISABLE Windows 8/10 Features and then ENABLE Fast Boot, but for some reason as soon as I enable any of these 3 options (doesn't matter which) in my BIOS my boot time doubles:

Windows 8/10 features
MSI Fast Boot
Fast Boot

Something is wrong somewhere.
