Can I use Laptop's Win10 install on a new Desktop?

I'm about to build my first desktop, and I have a laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from 7 which it came with). I don't plan on using the laptop anymore, so is it possible to install the laptop's hard drive into the desktop then move the Windows install to an SSD?

If not, should I just buy a Win10 key or would it be possible to contact Microsoft about transferring the OS over?

Solution
No. OEM copies are legally and actually tied to the first motherboard they are installed on. MS might transfer it to a replacement device if it was damaged or upgraded, but not to a desktop.
