Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP

Budget Range: 700-800 €

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Almost everything you can use a pc for. Stability and longevity more important than high end performance though

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: (e.g.: CPU, mobo, RAM, SSD)

Parts Preferences: by brand or type (intel cpu non negotiable, gigabyte mobo gskill ram, negotiable)

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1280x1024 until I get a new one, in the future

Additional Comments: I do play games but mostly turn based ones. I need this pc to be in good condition for quite a while, I will not be buying a new one for at least 7-8 years.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: (well my pc is almost 8 years old :p)

Quick link to parts (ignore vendors, I don't want to order parts from another country, I live in Greece)

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Vv7QXL

Breakdown:

CPU:
Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
http://ark.intel.com/products/88184/Intel-Core-i5-6500-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz?wapkw=i5-6500+3.2

Mobo:
Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5499#ov

But also thinking: GA-Z170X-Gaming 5
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5498#ov

UD3 is cheaper by around 35 € in my parts.

RAM
G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2400c15d-16grr

(it is virtually identical to ripjaws V but cheaper (at least here)
I really need a minimum of 2x8 GB, would like 4x8 but above my budget.

SSD
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
http://www.samsung.com/us/business/computing/solid-state-drives/MZ-N5E500BW

Need a minimum of 500 GB. Will be a system drive (win 7 probably, possibly win 10 if a gun is held to my head)

I have a Corsair hx 650w PSU I will be keeping
http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hx-series-hx650-power-supply-650-watt-80-plus-gold-certified-modular-psu

And a sapphire HD 6790 which I might replace in the future, not anytime soon though.

Good Lian Li case with plenty of room.

A particular quirk I have is that I tend to have a lot of HDDs inside. Currently I have around 6 sata hdds, one of which will be replaced by the ssd.

Any comments on the build? Any thoughts of a part that is overkill due to limitations by other parts?

Buy less RAM . 2 x4 gig is enough for games . But make it faster RAM

Cant really see the point in a SATA 3 M.2 drive . Its no faster than a 2.5 inch drive . Buy the Samsung 941 or preferably 950 which are much faster

Thanks for the reply outlander. 16 Ram is the bare minimum I'm willing to consider. I multitask a lot and use a lot of memory draining programs.

I suspected that m.2 would not make much of a difference. But the line you are suggesting is way above my budget (I need a 500GB drive) Maybe I should just buy a normal MZ-75E500B/EU 850 EVO sata3..

Games are not my problem. I am perfectly aware of memory usage, but I'm looking down the line here. It is very probable that I will be using this computer professionally in the future, and will not be changing it for quite a while.

Do you think the ram I posted above is too slow?

Again, I'm not playing any games with heavy sysreqs. Xcom2 or street fighter V will be about the heaviest it will ever get.

I can go to something like F4-3000C15D-16GVR or F4-3000C15D-16GRBB without going over budget, specially after getting a normal sata ssd instead of m.2
