Why is System and Windows Search Index using so much hard drive?

The main problem I've got is that both are utilising the disk so inefficiently, that iTunes is unable to buffer songs and causes 'CD jumping', despite the fact it is playing digital music.
Does anyone know how long indexing takes, and is it really necessary?
In addition, what is system actually using the hard disk for?

Running Windows 10, no SSD yet.

Solution
I've had issues with search and simply turned it off.

All that happens is it can take longer to search for files on your hard drive.

Monitor your CPU usage with Task Manager (right-click Start). Use "performance"-> CPU.

On older CPU's you should stay below 20% normally, with newer CPU's idle usage should stay usually under 10%, sometimes 3%.

Other:
You may have other issues as well, but start there.
