Videos Unable to Play On Any Media Player (Or No Audio) After Upgrade/Refresh

I just upgraded this computer to Win 10 and find I'm unable to play download videos or ones that I took with my camera that are in MP4 format. I've tried WMP, Quicktime and neither of them would play the video. VLC will play the video, but has no audio. I've looked online but am worried about downloading codecs when several people review them as malware. So I'm at wits end and hoping someone can help. And I should point with the VLC, when I check to see if it's muted, it's not even there.

So I downloaded a sample MP3 and that's not even playing anywhere. I should point out now that Youtube is working,, so I know videos CAN run. Just not sure whey these aren't.

Windows 10 does not come with video, or audio codecs.
