Hi all.

Just built my rig (GTX970, i5-4670k which I plan to overclock, 16gb Hyperx Fury @ 1833). I currently have a 27" 1080p 60Hz Viewsonic IPS panel which I bought for studying a few years ago. It's definitely not for gaming. With my new rig I play sim racers (Assetto, Project cars both at 100-140 fps), Rocket League (locked at 60fps), CSGO (gazilion fps but I play at 4:3 resolutions), GTAV (65-70 fps)... that's to say I play pretty much everything :)

I really want a 144Hz to smooth everything up, so I'm wondering if I should go for a 1080p or sacrifice *some* fps and go for a 1440p?

Main question : can anyone tell me how much fps you lose (in terms of percentage) when switching from 1080p to 1440p (considering all else is equal)? Will my GTX970 still be enough for 1440p gaming?

Lastly, is 1440p even a noticeable improvement from 1080p at that size and distance?

970 is not optimal for 1440p. you need almost double the graphics hardware for 1440p. 1440p has 78.26% more pixels than 1080p so expect a performance loss of around that amount compared to 1080p. AAA games like gta v will run nowhere near 144hz with high - ultra graphics settings on 1440p with a 970. 1080p is your sweet spot with a 970, even though those AAA games might still not run all the way up at 144hz. lower end games like cs:go will do great.

overall, i doubt you'd be happy with your performance on 1440p.

Thanks. Might as well save my money now and spend it later on a better monitor when 1440p/G-Sync become the norm. What do you think?

To confirm with Nerdrage - you need a 980 or ideally a 980ti for 1440p.
Must say is farking sweet on a 32" 1440p monitor with a 980ti. Save up and get it. How poor are we? Whats a thousand $? Its not like dropping 50k on a car.

Just picking this up since i have the same question as the OP. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/mLarry/saved/rQkp99, this is the build i made. Currently only getting stable FPS when i play WoW at "Good" quality. Was hoping to get stable fps at Ultra when i build this rig. Would dropping to a 1080p monitor help? Or is there a different problem?

you can run 1080p on a 1440p monitor, just change your game settings. like i said it takes 78% more power to run 1440p over 1080p. you would definitely see a huge improvement by doing this. a single r9 390 gives the best performance with a single 1080p monitor.
