Horizontal lines across monitor screen on dark colours? (DVI-D)

Hi there.

I'm having an issue with my display on my gaming PC. There are horizontal lines running across the screen, and are especially visible against dark backgrounds, such as the black background colour of the Steam Library or in game.

So far, I have been unable to remedy it, so I thought I'd try here. Anyone have any advice or a solution?

Relevant specs: 1920x1080, GTX970 GPU (drivers up to date), Acer K242HL Monitor. Connected via a DVI-D cable (24 + 1 pin, M to M)

do you have or can borrow a monitor compatible with your system for testing purposes to see if those lines show up on that other monitor? have you tried another cable? does your motherboard have onboard video especially dvi?
