My friend is offering to give me a free monitor he bought home from work. My dilemma is that one of the monitors is 16:10 (the resolution which at first glance I prefer), but 1050p, whereas the other is 16:9 but 1080p.

The larger (1050p) monitor is 22", and the smaller screen (1080p) monitor is around 20"-21". I've not had chance to compare directly, but they look to be equally wide, however the larger monitor is significantly taller. I'm planning on using this for my first gaming PC build, so I've no past experience with gaming on PCs, but from my first impressions the 16:10 screen just seems to have a more natural height:width ratio (smaller monitor is widescreen).

I assume 16:10 vs 16:9 is just a matter of personal preference, so my real question is this: will the 1050p vs 1080p change be noticeable, and will the extra 1"-2" affect the resolution in any way? I am worried that the combination of a bigger screen and less pixels will make a noticeable difference.
Thanks,
Adam

Monitors used to be made in 1920 x 1200 resolution.
You will have no problem with that in games, or anywhere else.
1080P(1920 x 1080) became the norm because it was cheaper to use a panel that was common to both TV sets and monitors.

Actually, I like 1920 x 1200 better and would pick that one, all other considerations being equal.
Can you get both?
Dual monitors are wonderful for desktop operations.

Thanks for the quick reply! This monitor resolution is not 1920 x 1200 though, but 1680 x 1050. Will this still be OK for gaming?

EDIT: I've read that you should try to run games at the monitor's native resolution. Will all games be able to run at 1680x1050?
