Activate windows 10 with unused windows 8 key

I'm moving my wife from her laptop which is almost dead, to a pc so she can play games again and carry on her artwork. She has upgraded to Windows 10 but it's oem windows 7 from her laptop, can I move the hdd over to the pc and use an unused windows 8 key that I have to activate windows 10 or do I need to Install Windows 8 with the key then upgrade to Windows 10 afterwards. Don't wanna prat around doing that if I don't have to.

You can install directly with a Windows 7/8(.1) license key with the latest Windows 10 build. You can get the download tool from Microsoft. You can create a USB/DVD/ISO with the tool from which to install.
