Ok, I bought a 2tb Seagate external drive which I swapped in my ps4, and took the 500 gig drive out of the ps4 to use as my external drive for my laptop.

But, my problem is, is that when I put in the usb cord to connect my external hard drive to my laptop, it lights up, but it doesn't show up anywhere on my laptop. I've done the disc management, and nothing is showing up as well.

Info on laptop:
HP Pavilion g6-1b68nr Notebook PC
Model #: QA059UAR
Serial #: 6CH1310YQZ
Came with windows 7: did the upgrade to WIndows 10 64bit

I have no idea as to why it wont show up on my laptop. If anyone can help me out, please!

Thanks!

Michele

Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182313 (2.5" )
or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182363 (3.5") should work just fine.

And next time, do NOT get an external disk with the intention of pulling it apart, they are more expensive and do NOT work as external enclosures for existing disks.
Sounds like you voided your warranty and did something VERY stupid. External drives do have regular desktop drives inside, but the SATA->USB interface is specifically made for the particular drive that was in there originally. You need a new enclosure for it to work.

So, where would I, or how would I find a new enclosure for it to work?

Hi there CrazZzy1_Michele,

Is the drive even powering up?

I would agree with basroil. You need to get some third party enclosure or just SATA to USB adapter.
I believe the HDD is 2.5'' inches right? In that case, you will not need a power cord. The USB cable would be able to spin the drive up.

Cheers,

I don't hear it making any noises or anything, Just the light comes on.

And, you said I can get a third party enclosure, or a sata to usb adapter... the enclosure that came with the Seagate 2tb, I wouldn't be able to use that with the Toshiba one? and yes, it's 2.5".

The drive from the PS4 is a Toshiba MQ01ABD050 What enclosure would you recommend? And would it definitely work?

Thanks again! :)

Michele

When's the last time you were able to pay for your lunch in mexican pesos (assuming you live outside mexico)? Basically like that, it's functionally the same, but doesn't mean you can use it outside it's intended use!

The enclosure I listed should work just fine with that one, it's a ~1.5W 5V only drive (http://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/us/product/storage-products/client-hdd/mq01abdxxx.html), which means it's well under the 500mA specification for USB and should work just fine even on older laptops.

Yeah, the one I took apart to put in the PS4, was the Seagate Backup plus Slim portable storage 2tb http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Portable-External-Storage-STDR2000100/dp/B00FRHTSK4

And this is the Toshiba one I took from the PS4, to use as a backup for my laptop: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-2-5-inch-laptop-5400rpm-MQ01ABD050/dp/B008RZLSWE

Ok, so the Seagate enclosure that I have left, wouldn't work with the Toshiba drive I have? I would have to get the enclosure you posted above, correct?

I've been pretty clear about that since the first post. Most likely the enclosure you have was designed to work only with the original drive. Using the enclosure I gave you a link to will let you use the drive just fine.
