Understanding Dual-Link DVI refresh rates and resolution

If you have one Dual-Link DVI port on your graphics card, and one Dual-Link DVI port on your monitor, how do you work out what resolutions you can achieve & the frequency at what it will display at each resolution?

It seems that the restriction is always based on the actual port/cable as opposed to the quality of the monitor. So for the sake of argument, assume you have the best monitor in the whole wide world.

Thanks. I've had a read. So am I correct in thinking that the maximum resolution at 120hz using a Dual-Link DVI port on either end of the cable, is 1920x1200?
