Hello

I own a 1080p 21:9 monitor. I would like to watch netflix at 1080p, but google chrome and firefox dont support it. I can use internet explorer for 1080p, but I get severe letterbox effect. The image is tiny on my screen. Is there any way to make it fullscreen on internet explorer?

Thank you,

Allan

Thank you for your response.

My monitors aspect ratio is 21:9, so the content would fit the screen without stretching.

However, I do want to steam 1080p content from netflix, but Google Chrome dosent support it.

I was wondering if there was any way to get the 21:9 to become fullscreen on internet explorer.

Thank you

Yes I do mean zooming in.

As I understand it, netflix encodes the movies in 16:9 format, but the content is 21:9, so I get black bars on the top, bottom, and sides.

I have found an extension for Google Chrome that works, but I havent found one for Internet Explorer.

Thank you

You're not very bright. It doesn't matter what your monitor is. The content isn't 21:9 you cut off part of the top and bottom when you force this. To see the full picture you will always have bars on the sides with an ultra-wide. There are apps for every browser you should use to get the forced image.... you shouldn't use internet explorer.

To be fair mate, I think you're the one who isn't very bright. Most iflms on Netflix are in fact 21:9 but encoded with black bars at the top and bottom to fill out the 16:9 common aspect ratio. So what the OP is asking for is very sensible; when you play standard 21:9 content encoded for 16:9 display you end up with a black border around the whole of the image, like watching internet porn in the 90s.

I've tried a few Chrome extensions but as I odn't use IE I cant help buddy, sorry. I'm trying out a new 49" Samsung at 32:9, so unless I do an Elvis and watch two files at once, it's even worse!

I'm still looking for a good solution for this. Each workaround I know of has its drawbacks. There are Ultrawide fix plugins for browsers like Firefox, but the problem with the web player is that it's purely stereo sound, 2.0 format. No Dolby atmos or even Dolby 5.1. The Windows 10 app doesn't have built in 21:9 support, but there is a decent workaround by switching Windows to "Tablet mode" (search for the setting in start). When in Tablet Mode, the video will zoom in to fill the entire screen when you press that zoom button in the lower right corner of the Netflix app. Another perk with using the Windows 10 app is that you get the full 5.1 sound (and Dolby Atmos on the few titles supporting this). The problem here (because there are always problems!) is that any subtitles will be partially off the screen as Netflix only adapts subtitles for 16:9 screens... There is also some guy making a custom build of the Netflix app optimised for 21:9. But, that will have to be side-loaded and it's not exactly supported by Big Corp, Inc..
I randomly remind Netflix support people about the lack of proper 21:9 support. Hopefully it will be fixed one day. Amazon Prime does it without any hacks.

As of 1/16/2019, the edge browser supports 21:9 aspect ratio on netflix. I don't know when the change was made, but I tried it today for the first time. No changes to resolution or zooming required. A little late to the party, but I hope this helps.
