Quick Question - Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 clean install and activation

So i have a HP Notebook which came with Windows 8.1 and i want to do a clean install Windows 10...I have downloaded the iso from Microsoft and i have the product key that Windows 8.1 has...So the question is can i activate Windows 10 with the same product key? ( I really want to do a clean install and not an upgrade from 8.1 )

on how to geek says that you can use your key but microsoft says that you have to upgrade to 10 first so they can be activated and then do a clean install?

yeah i agree with chris its what i do use ur free upgrade its easiest way
