do i need to pay for anti virus software like bitdefender or norton ?

If you have to ask, the answer is YES. Both of those are excellent and top tier, either one will work. Norton tends to be easier to use, bitdefender has a bit more options to play with.

I'm partial to Kaspersky's paid security suite. Their vault feature is top-notch for securing the information you store in it, such as usernames/passwords, banking account information, SSN.

Free versions of antivirus/malware do the basics and suit many users' needs, though.

I do strongly suggest avoiding AVG Free.

I fully agree with this, I literally ONLY use malewarebytes and my own methods of ridding of viruses (very rare that i need to do anything more than a custom rootkit scan from malewarebytes)

P.S. I have had to disinfect more systems with malewarebytes that have a paid version of norton security on it in my lifetime than anything.
