I've always wondered if you can use disk utility from a Mavericks drive to fix a Capitan system drive, this is just an example, so can you use the Disk utility form one version of OS X on a different version? which are compatible?

Solution
If it's supported it will, if it isn't Disk Utilities will refuse; I guess it depends on the versions and the problem.
I have (in the past) used a Snow Leopard boot disk to fix a Lion Disk Corruption.
I'd expect earlier builds to refuse to try and fix El Cap issues due to the new security descriptors.
