Comparing the I5 4460 vs AMD FX-8350 Black Edition

What is the performance difference? Is it big enough for me not to buy the more value ordinate option of the FX 8350 or is it really big enough for me to buy the I5 4460? Keep in mind that the motherboards for AM3+ are cheaper than that of the I5. Cheaper at a price at least, the AM3+ motherboards I've looked at have only PCI 2.0 vs the LGA 1151 having PCI 3.0 though I'm not sure that matters for performance if it does let me know. I was looking at getting the R9 390, but if that's over kill and there is a much cheaper but still great card let me know.

Well then, should I just not worry about getting an ATX mobo and get a Micro? I prefer ATX for the size, but if it's not really that big of a deal I can opt for the cheaper option of a $46 micro mobo.

it would depend on the board. What two boards are you looking at?

Agree with the i5 4460. The single core performance that the i5 has over the 8350 will help be help more helpful in most applications. The only reason to be interested in the 8350 in this case is if you are interested in overclocking.

Yeah the i5 is better for gaming 90% of the time. Even if you overclock the 8350 it's going to have trouble keeping up with the stock clocked i5 in a lot of games. If you do go with AMD, do not cheap out on the motherboard with the FX 8350. If you're looking at the $50 to $70 boards, almost all of them will have weak VRMs that will throttle the FX 8350 as they can't handle that chip's high power draw.

get micro atx unless you need the extra PCI slots for a dual graphics card set up

Just chiming in with what others are recommended. An i5 4460 will almost always be better and since you can't overclock it there's no need for a beefy motherboard to do so. Might as well go as cheap as you can (and still get a quality board) and micro atx is fine for most. You're also fine with the stock Intel cooler. Really, unless you're an overclocking hobbyist there's no benefit to going with an AMD FX 8-core processor - even from a cost perspective.

I was looking at going with this one: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Motherboards-Z97-PC-MATE/dp/B00K23BW70/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459374709&sr=1-1&keywords=msi+z97+pc+mate+LGA+1150

VS

This: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GA-Z97X-GAMING-Gaming-Networking-Motherboard/dp/B00K2RQDXY/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1459374002&sr=1-1&keywords=gigabyte+gaming+3+motherboard+ddr3

I feel the MSI Mobo would do well enough, but I'm not sure if I should blow the extra money on the Gaming 3 one. I need at least 3 system fan headers for my fans. If you know of any cheaper options let me know.

Is there any GPU that would be more value friendly that could run fallout 4 on ultra, other than the R9 390? Or is that my only option? I've had this build in my notes for some time. I'm just trying to take it down a notch in price to make it more achievable.

I own the MSI z87 PC mate
Unless you plan to upgrade in the future to an i7 4790k than a z97 board is a waste because the only upgrade worth your money would be the i7 4790k which is pointless to have on a non z97 board
If you plan to not upgrade your cpu to an overclockable CPU than get this http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-H97M-Micro-Socket-Motherboard/dp/B00KL9HU2Q

I think that Micro ATX will work. I think I can make it work with my second fan plug. Thanks!

Thank you very much for showing me that Mobo! I will be buying it.
