Yes in several games at stock frequency, but much less if you can overclock it a lot. This benchmark is for GTA V (there are other similar benchmarks), but you can see the performance of the R9 280X compared to other GPUs when using a powerful CPU: http://www.techspot.com/review/991-gta-5-pc-benchmarks/page2.html Then you can check the CPU performance using a more more powerful GPU: http://www.techspot.com/review/991-gta-5-pc-benchmarks/page6.html If you can overclock it to the frequency of the FX-8350, then its performance definitely is acceptable. If you don't already have that CPU, then you should consider a better gaming CPU.

You can pair it with any GPU. If you have a quality motherboard, then get a very good cooler to overclock it a lot higher than 3.5 GHz (it can turbo to 4.0 GHz). Anandtech were able to overclock it at a frequency that makes it perform quite well: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8864/amd-fx-8320e-cpu-review-the-other-95w-vishera With good components you should be able to reach 4.5 GHz.

You're right, but the GA-970A-UD3P is the minimum that I'd use to overclock.
