HDD use after clean windows 10 install to new SSD

Once a clean install is done on the SSD and the the old HDD is reconnected, is it simply a case of formatting the old HDD to use it as purely a storage drive without an OS?

Yes. Its as simple as that. Just connect the HDD and format the drive directly. If in any case the HDD partitions are not showing up, go to Disk Manager and format the HDD partitions or just delete & remake them.
