I admit I'm not much of a hardware components guy. Same with cars. I don't think about them much until I need new ones. So I'm working on my first custom build, to be used almost entirely for video production - 4K editing (Premiere Pro) and 3D visual effects (After Effects, C4D). I read through many many posts on here. A lot of the most relevant info for custom builds seemed to be a few years old. For the three most important parts, the CPU, MOBO, and video card, I went with the fastest, most powerful options I could afford: the i7-5820K on an ASRock X99 Extreme4 ATX LGA2011-3 with an NVIDIA GTX 970. Because this will be primarily a video production workstation, I need to keep the option for SLI available. When money becomes available I will add more RAM and hopefully another graphics card. For the remaining parts I used the "Best" lists on this site. I did the best I could, but I'm open to suggestions to improve performance or save money. Still not settled on whether to get Windows 7 or 8.1 OS. I still love 7, and heard nothing but awful stories about 10.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to respond - much appreciated! Looks like the only major difference in our parts lists is CPU. I looked at the 5930K that you recommended. The performance data that I found shows about +20-25% faster processing. Is that about what you would expect? I'm just a little concerned about the +$200 price difference though. Since both the 5820K and 5930K are compatible w/ the ASRock X99 Extreme4 ATX LGA2011-3 MOBO, would it be a reasonable to start w/ the 5820K and then when I have some more money to upgrade, swap CPUs then (with more RAM probably)?

Thanks again!
- DK

I would go with the i7 5930k or the broadwell equivalent which will be able to use the same CPU socket, as for $200, it is worth it, think of the time saved, I'd guess that is going to be worth a lot more than the $200 spent on the CPU. I would also suggest looking into the gtx 1070 now that it has been announced
