Try booting from an install disc or repair disc and doing a repair. If you can't do that, you will probably need to do a clean install, i.e. format the drive and reinstall.

Yeah she has some files that she doesn't want to erase on there. Don't want to wjpe the drive. Trying to salvage. Maybe a system restore to a previous date.

if ther are needed files i usually physically take out the hard drive connect it to different computer get the files reinstall the hdd install windows copy files back over.

Try the repair option first. If that doesn't work, you can either esco_sid's suggestion or make yourself a Linux disc, boot from it, and recover whatever you wish. Linux Mint has a user interface similar to Windows so you don't have to know anything about Linux. You can download the ISO file here:

This is why it's a good idea to copy all files to a USB drive. Once the computer is repaired and the files are moved back onto the computer, lock the thumb drive away for use in the future. When I say "lock it away," I mean lock and key. Keep your data safe from prying eyes.
