I am planning on upgrading my pc with a new mobo, cpu and ram, so do I have to buy a new copy of windows 10? I have retail version of windows 10.

Solution
No, you can move it :)

As above states, if you only have it on one pc at a time, you can move the retail copy to your next pc, just have to deactivate it on the old one first

So even though you using everything else the same, swapping motherboard/CPU is seen as a new PC to Microsoft.

Here are instructions on how to do that: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/deactivate-uninstall-windows-product-key

if you have any problems with the transfer, contact Microsoft and tell them what you are doing.

This 'deactivate' actually does nothing. It simply tells 'this pc' that it has no license. It does not phone home and tell the activation servers.

It is not needed, nor referenced in the EULA from Microsoft.
All that says is that you must remove it from the old PC.
There is no 'deactivation' needed.

I wasn't sure, its not a question I had come across before. So I searched and found that. It was probably more useful before win 10 and fact licence is tied to hardware now, if its not a retail copy, it makes it pointless.

Even before Win 10, was not needed, and does little.
