Hi guys,

Looking to upgrade some of my hardware, and I'm already set on using an ASUS CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z. Although I'm running in to a bit of a pickle when it comes down to the processor.

I've noticed that the 9590 and 8350 have a lot of similarities, but also a few major features that make each better than the other.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these seem to be the main factors that people tend to argue about the two (as far as I can tell from other threads):

  • ■ 9590 has more cache (16MB) which is double that of the 8350 (8MB).
    ■ 9590 of course has a higher base clock speed (4.7 GHz).
    ■ 9590 has better single core performance (taken from here)
    ■ 8350 consumes less power and produces less heat.
    ■ 8350 is cheaper, and "identical" to 9590, just needs overclocking to reach the same speed (source)
I intend to use this system for gaming (hoping to run some powerful ENB's on Skyrim, etc), and my graphics card is currently a Radeon R9 270X. (Will be upgrading this too if people think this bottlenecks me.) I'd prefer to save as much money as I can, but I'm not too bothered about the extra expenditure.

I know there are a lot of threads like this, but I just wanted to know what people think is better for me to buy if I intend to use this motherboard. I've not yet decided on whether I'm going to upgrade any other specs, but intend to cool both of these options with a Corsair H80i V2 cooler. I'm also asking on behalf of a few friends that don't have TH accounts, who intend to build machines with similar specs.

Any other criticisms about the motherboard, the processor(s), and the graphics card are welcome.

Thanks.

Hi Alan, thanks for the speedy reply.

Unfortunately I've already got the CROSSHAIR V motherboard, so I'm afraid that intel is out of the question (unless I buy a new board).

If I went down the intel road, what motherboard could you suggest instead?

Cheers

Agreed, better to sell the board than go with a 4-5 year old AMD CPU.

I'm a fan of the value ASRock provides, so I'd go with one of their less expensive Z170 offerings and pair it with an i5 6600K or i7 6700K.

If you don't plan to overclock, use an H170 board and a non-K CPU.

Hi both, thanks for answering.

I must admit, after having a few AMD builds, I'm noticing that they just aren't performing as well as I hope they would when it comes to games. The general consensus seems to be that Intel is far better for gaming. So I must admit I'm swaying towards an Intel machine a little more.

For this thread though, and future people who may look at it with some similar questions, have either of you got any input for the processors and motherboard mentioned?

Thanks for your input!

Different manufacturers offer different features to help them stand out. Asus often has proprietary audio codecs, while Gigabyte is known for putting a proprietary NIC on their boards. However, there won't be any difference in stability between the least expensive and most expensive board.

Thanks a lot for this input, Ecky. I'll have a look at your suggestions!

The i5 is more than enough for gaming. To give you a clear picture, the i5 4440 doesn't bottleneck a GTX 970 SLI!
