I need a good monitor that meets my criteria.
I was going to get a 1440p monitor, as I'm pretty sure the graphics card I'm going to get, the Asus GeForce GTX 1080, could run 1440p without a sweat. However, after some quick research, I found that many people said 1440p monitors were too big or too expensive if you wanted good quality. If you think otherwise, you can suggest a 1440p monitor as well (and explain why I should get 1440p instead, please).
Here's the criteria:
-21.5-22"
-1 or 2ms response time
-Good color quality
-144hz
-Not too expensive (<$300-350)
The same goes for 1440p monitors as well if you think I should get 1440p.
Thanks for your help!

But if i were you, i'd get the 1070 as it'll do fine in 1440p adn this gorgeous monitor:

A monitor is a waaaay better investment than a GPU as it lasts alot longer and is, after all, the part of teh computer that you interact with.
As for size and 1440p, that resolution is perfect for 27" and also provides more desktop real estate to work with witch helps productivity ALOT. Not to mention games look gorgeous and alot more immersive on a bigger screen.

Is a refresh rate that low really a problem? Could I get a 21.5" monitor with 75hz and gsync? I just feel 24" would be a bit big (im concerned about it being too big cause the laptop I play on now only has a ~16-17 inch screen), the ppi is only 91. The 21.5" has 102 ppi.

Go for 24" without a second thought. It's not too big. Not by far. And teh dpi is just fine on 24" 1080p.

Is it really worth a lower dpi just for a higher refresh rate? I want the highest quality image possible, but if 144hz is that important...

It's not the frequency as much as the size itself. With 21.5 1080p you find yourself having to lean over the table to the monitor to read some stuff. Theres a balance on windows, higher DPi is not automatically better. Quite the oposite sometimes as having to use high DPI settings in windows is.. unpleasant to say the least.
Like i've said, 24" is the sweetspot for 1080p.
