Swearing? Allowed or no?

[strike]Usually some of the milder words are tolerated in moderate use[/strike], but certainly no F or B or N. I wouldn't recommend swearing if that's what you're planning on since young people do browse these forums. And certainly nothing that would be of insult to any individual.

I'd just recommend not doing it altogether.

People have been banned for that apparently. You can find many instances if you Google Banned from Tom's Hardware. I consider it a good idea to avoid cursing or calling people names.

According to Tom's Hardware's Terms of service

We strictly prohibit the posting of the following types of content on all areas of our sites:

nudity, pornography, and sexual material of a lewd, lecherous or obscene nature and intent or that violates local, state and national laws.
any material that violates or infringes in any way upon the proprietary rights of others, including, without limitation, copyright or trademark rights; this includes "WAREZ" (copyrighted software that is distributed illegally), "mp3" files of copyrighted music, copyrighted photographs, text, video or artwork. If you don't own the copyright or have express authorization and documented permission to use it, don't put it on your site at BOM (if you do have express permission you must say so clearly on your BOM homepage). BOM will terminate the memberships of, and remove the pages of, repeat infringers.
any material that is threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, vulgar, obscene, profane, indecent, or otherwise objectionable; including posting other peoples' private information.
content that promotes, encourages, or provides instructional information about illegal activities - specifically hacking, cracking, or phreaking.
any software, information, or other material that contains a virus, "Trojan Horse", "worm" corrupted data, or any other harmful or damaging component;
hate propaganda or hate mongering, swearing, or fraudulent material or activity;

NOTICE THE WORD SWEARING NEAR THE END. Big no-no.

Oh, definitely no B, F and definitely N as turkey said, but I mean enhancing what you're saying, like "That is one s*** system" (I think you can fill in those characters). But I don't really mean targeted at people, as I know that aint allowed

Yeah but saying their system is s*** still sounds kind of rude. Saying it needs improvement is better.

How about "The 9590 is one of AMD's s******** creations?" That's usually a situation Id do it in

Well, all the mods say not so swear, so I'd say no don't say it.

Some mods get into semantics and interpret things the way they want. Every system is flawed. The best way to avoid any issues is to avoid anything that could be remotely perceived as an insult or even borderline swearing. That system is incapable of playing any games. Would of course be preferred over your censored suggestion which a mod could easily interpret as violating the TOS.

I think in general it's just immature. Reminds me of when I got to middle school, that's when we all started swearing cuz it was da kool stuff. I mean, adults swear casually, but I think swearing a lot just reminds me of middle school kids trying to seem cool around their friends. I think by not swearing people listen better to you also.

Generally, being banned for swearing (or other behavior issues) only happens after a long train of repeated occurrences and warnings.
"Dude, don't do that"
"Really. Don't do that"
"OK, we're not telling you again"
"Awright...here's a 3 day ban because we told you multiple times"
a week later..."OK, that's it. Through the door or out the window"

For some people, though...The time between "Dude don't do that" and "Your grandchildren can't come here" is measured in nanoseconds.

Swearing is immature if it's overused. If you add at least one swear per sentence, that's to the point where it's immature. But if you slide it in at the right time, it can really enhance your sentence and in a comical way :D. Just think any adult comedy.

Anyway, back to the topic, I really don't care what's "safe" to do on here to not get caught. I just need a final answer, is swearing allowed (by rules), and if it is, what's the acceptable usage of it?

Well yes, I do have one, would vulgar language include all swears, or just bad ones such as mod edit:language etc.?

What do you want? A specific never to be changed list of any and all 'bad words'?

That's not going to happen. There is no one 'list' It is also the tone in which it happens.

Here's the deal:
If you say "That is so f***ed up", that will be noticed, edited out, and commented on.
"Dude, don't do that"

Repeat, and it goes down the chain of events of what I posted earlier.
How far do you wish to push the issue? Because I'm pretty sure we can push harder.

We try to keep this a friendly place. Vulgarity simply demeans everything. If you cannot comport yourself without resorting to gutter talk, then maybe your message is lacking.
