I am looking for an cheap upgrade for my gpu,atm i have an r7 250,and i have found an r9 280x that has overheating issues. He is selling the gpu for 98$.I know to fix this problem but I am not that sure about this one, seems to be an easy fix, what should i do?Should I risk 98$ and try to fix it or get an HD 7970 that was used for mining too but it costs 130$,i am an student every $ counts.

That is really expensive for an abused card!

Have you seen the RX 480? You can get one shipped for just a hair over $200 depending on the taxes in your state.

With 3 kids in collage at the same time, i certainly understand your budget issues.... but $98 for a GPU you have to "fix" doesn't seem like a good deal. The R9 200 series ran hot, if its not working as designed, that can be corrected but the card will still run hot.

With the new 480 at a suggested $199, I wouldn't expect any bargains in the next few weeks, but buy end of July, you should be able to find a bargain. Now you have a card with a future and a warranty.

Personally, I am not comfortable with the state of the rx480. The reference model has been pushed to its power limits, to the point that it is over drawing from pci-e. Overclocking pushes the draw on pci-e to 100 watts! Non-reference models will probably deal with this issue but as is right now it is a bit of a problem.
