Need help with activating Windows

Hey guys, so I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my PC, i originally started out with Windows 8 pro, then upgraded to 8.1 pro and now to 10 pro. While resetting my PC with my Windows 8 disk (wish I made an 8.1 recovery drive before) it was fine before windows kept telling me to activate windows (I've tried with the number of the disk), but I didn't mind after 2 months of using it, then I finally made the switch the Windows 10 pro w/o a windows product key, but lets get to the question. My friend can get me a Windows key of any version, so since I'm on Windows 10 now, do I get a W10 key, or do I get a W8 key since it's what the version that shipped with my PC was.

Get a windows 10 key, not all the 8 keys will activate an upgraded install when entered after the fact.
