I have not moved a HDD from one host to another.
Is it possible considering I applied permissions for users?
Will it worked if I create the same users on the new host?

BTW. this is from NT4 to WinSvr2012

I assume this is a data drive only.

There are no show stoppers. You can move the drive.

Both NT4 and Win 2012 use NTFS.

The SIDs for the users on the old system will likely be different for the same users on the new system, so you may need to update your permissions.

If I have confused you let me know and I'll explain it in more detail.

So, if userA had access to fileZ on Host1, the admin or everyone on host2 will have access to File Z?

P.S. Sorry, it was win2003 server to 2012... but probably doesn't matter

If you had "everyone" permissions on the files/folders on the drive on the old server, they will be the same when the drive is in the new system.

If you had specific user permissions, UserA, that user is given a serial number called a "SID". After moving the drive, when you look at the permissions for the files/folders you will see the old UserA as a long strng of numbers. That is the permissions from the old server.

If you created a UserA on the new system before moving the drive, you just need to apply permissions for that user to the files/folders on the drive once the drive is installed, and delete the old permissions for the old UserA
