Want to build a system with a powerful proscessor and graphic capabilities. IDEAs(?)

I know how to work a Computer, not how a computer works. I need a strong system capable to run at fast speeds, and a great graphics system able to display ultimate detail; as I will be using it for running 3D architectural programs. Those are my main concerns but other than that I don't know how to build a computer or where to start. I have researched some build sites but its mostly stock items and I want to find out what is good or not. If something is just a brand name or actually works.

We really need to know more. What specific software will you be using and what kind of budget do you have? Most of the software vendors will also have hardware requirements and forums with other professionals that can give you an idea of what type of system will be the most productive.
