I realize GTX 1060 is still under NDA, but we do have a general idea of what to expect from what I understand architecture-wise and even performance-wise.

Let's say GTX 1060 actually performs like GTX 980 in current games.

What are the advantages of each of these cards? Which one is likely to perform better over the long term?

the GTX 1060 is currently a made up part from cut down GP 104 dies and will see limited if any release at all. It's merely a 480 press spoiler. If you wait, you'll see real GTC 1060's based on GP 106 dies.

This is not fanboyism, merely an acknowledgment of how Nvidia markets.

As for the gp106 vs Polaris10- I think the same like most -AMD card will get better with age because many of it's new techs still need to be programmed for, and it being similar to tech in consoles will help further.
While gtx1060, (I'm just guessing here), should be better at antialiasing. RX480 performs somewhat worse than R9 390 at it, while gtx1060 with it's high clock will have much higher pixel rate available and should do AA well.

I'll believe it when I see it, which will take a while , and when it launches in reality it will be a kick ass little card. In the meantime, these spoilers are nonsense -mere marketing hype. Cards in hand, believe, no cards in hand, don't believe. Same with AMD.

Do pictures work? Or in about 2 weeks can you drive to a microcenter?

The GTX 1060 is not NDA, it has been officially announced by Nvidia. We have pricing, shipping dates, some statements from Nvidia on its performance and features. We haven't published a review of the GPU yet, however, so we can't confirm its performance, but the GPU is certainly real.

It also does not use the GP104 die, it uses a new GP106 die with 1280 cores.

Another pro or con is your current monitor or future plans on one. We already see clone sellers using the high end IPS gaming monitor panels only available with freesync- i.e.- https://www.amazon.com/PX277-27-inch-2560x1440-FreeSync-Technology/dp/B01HPDAF68/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468040384&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=144hz+gaming+monitor&psc=1 or BenQ TNs for about the same.

Factor out the lower end of both cards unless you have a terminal disease and don't plan on outliving a 1K monitor. The 4GB 480 is a joke and whoever thought 3 GB was adequate considering 4K is being pushed harder these days should be fired. The 6GBs on the 1060 should be adequate for 1440p in the foreseeable future but SLI/CF 4K, ultimately the 480 8GB might be closer than the expected faster GTX 1060.

However, you can have a situation where a slower card can still equal better depending on free or gsync which are huge in the 40-70 FPS range.

If that's true, then apparently this review was a waste of time.

The NDA ends July 15th I think

I think he means the 1060 had no SLI headers. So if it did SLI it would have to use the PCI bus like Crossfire. Not sure if this is going to happen ever.

the 1060 won't support SLI according to Nvidia.

On July 15th I'll see some independent reviews then and if it's not a paper launch which i suspect it will be, maybe we can buy one and see. Until then, it's vapor like Vega and a 480 that can OC reasonably.

Long term I'd say the RX 480. If your choosing between the RX480 and the GTX 1060 that is.
The 480 supports crossfire, so if your planning on upgrading in the future you only have to just add another one, and your beating a 1080.
However the 1060 does not supposedly have the SLI capability, a plan of Nvidia to keep up their customers for the 1080. :) So if your upgrading when you have a 1060, then your going to need something new.

I am not planning on going sli. I want to get one of these cards and I'm not sure of which. My friend was saying to go with the 480 because the architecture is going to run direct x12 way better than the 1060. But at the same time if the 1060 is going to be 15% better right off the bat with lower wattage and run cooler, idk what to do. I was hoping to get at least 2 years out of the card if i were to buy one. Can you guys give me some advice?

It is doubtful GTX1060 is faster than RX480- leaked benchmarks from nVidia so far are very strange and seem like they were cherry picking a lot. Leaked OpenCL tests show GTX1060 wining in 2 out of 7 tests, RX480 wining in 5 out of 7. It is also very likely that GTX1060 will overclock worse than RX480. DX12 and Vulkan results also favor RX480, but we need to know base speed first. So, it is best to wait for reviews and see hard numbers on speed, temperatures, noise and overcloking results. And then- choose whichever is a better deal depending on prices in shops.

Then I suggest waiting until the 19th when the 1060 will actually be on the market, and check the benchmarks. The 480 has a slower clock speed, but 2 more GBs of VRAM. The 1060 has a higher clock speed, but 2 less GBs of VRAM. Benchmarks show that the 480 is on par with the 970 in performance, but the 1060 is supposedly better than a 980 as NVidia says.
