How did he 'download' this? Step by step.
What was the OS before?

He said it was windows 8 and he just updated it to windows 10. The day it came out

OK. Upgraded or installed. Not 'downloaded'.

So it's been running OK until now? Win 10 came out last July.

No it didn't run right after he upgraded to windows 10, we just decided to try and figure it out again. We tried right after 8t happened but got frustrated and gave up

Then consider a full clean install of Win 10.

Assuming it actually Upgraded the first time, even with issues, it should activate fine with a clean install.
