Hi,
I'm currently in the middle of designing a new gaming PC for myself for gaming which I will be buying relatively soon.
(with 6700k and 1080p 144hz monitor)

I was wondering if the jump from the GTX 1070 to 1080 is worth the large price premium. I have noticed about a 15-20 FPS difference on average between the two from benchmark (1080p), however in New Zealand the price difference is $500 NZD ($365.58 USD) from about $900 to $1400. It is also important to keep in mind that the jump from 970 to 980ti was of a similar jump with both price and performance after looking up some benchmarks. I am able to purchase the more expensive 1080, however this is more about whether I should, rather than if I can.
In addition, because of this FPS gap, I was wondering if the 1080 would last much longer than a 1070 for running games at 1080p on a 144hz monitor above say 70-80 FPS, or if both cards would eventually need swapping out at around the same time frame (2-3 years). This then making the 1080 not much of a benefit.

What are your thoughts and suggestions on the matter, and also about what brand of GPU to get, as stated in the title above.

Thanks in advance.

Do you think there would be a noticeable difference between (for example) 90 and 110 FPS on a 144hz monitor? Or would it largely go unnoticed.

You know, I have played on 144hz monitors and they are smooth, but I wasn't sold. I play a lot of FPS games too. Still fragging on my triple 60hz LCDs. As far as I have read, you wouldn't notice between those fps you mentioned. Many people can't see well enough to see over 100fps. Does the monitor have Gsync? I do recommend that as it produces noticeable differences to me.

I currently have an ASUS VG248QE, which does not have (as far as I know) Gsync.

My vote for 1080p gaming is the 1070. No way in hell you are gonna max that card out on anything. Just install your hw/sw, run benchmarks to measure temps and that performance is where it should be. Then just get your game on. Turn fps counter off. And feel the game play. Like just play it. Cant stress that enough. I got all wrapped up in watching the fps counter to make sure it stayed pegged at 144hz. lol. dont worry about it. With a 1070 at 1080p you will never ever have a drop in frames low enough to feel. My .2
