Hi everyone, I'm building a new Pc soon and I cant decide on what monitor to buy. I mostly play competitive games like Starcraft 2, League of legends, world of warcraft and CS GO, although I might play some newer titles like Doom and GTA as well. I want to put either the gtx 1070 or the gtx 1080 depending on what monitor I get. Should I go for 1440p 144 Hz Gsync or just stick with 1080p 144 Hz? Which type of monitor would be better for competative gaming? I have been looking at the Asus Swift Pg278q, but it seems to be having alot of quality control issues currently. Is 1440p really worth it?? Thanks!!

I just upgraded my PC and switched from 1080p to 1440p (Asus Swift 1ms gsync monitor). And honestly, I can't tell the difference...(maybe because it's been more than 1 week I played game @ 1080p while waiting for the new parts to arrive)

But this is exceptional. Most people say that the jump from 1080p to 1440p is pretty huge. I just happen to be blind and can't tell...

GTX 1080 @ 1080p will be an overkill, unless you only play competitive FPS it isn't worth it. At 1440p a 1080 is great. You will get mostly stable 60FPS in truly gorgeous games like The Witcher 3 on ultra settings. And more than 60FPS on most other games (provided you have a 144hz monitor)

For competative gaming there's no difference more than the picture will be sharper with the 1440p, whatever graphicscard you put in doesn't matter for the type of games you play, both cards are overkill, but go with the 1080 to flex a bit ;)

You can look at the Acer equivalents as well.

For competitive I don't think you can beat the 144hz monitors, and the best ones are the 27" 2560x1440 from ASUS and Acer.

The PG279Q has some quality issues with light bleed, particularly around the controls, they offered free replacement for those. Not aware of many with the PG278Q. Early samples did have quality control issues on the application of the film, fingerprints and other debris made it between the LCD and film, haven't heard of that since. Keep in mind that the people that can afford these things are very vocal about the slightest issue.
