Hi guys

So today I done a clean install of Windows 10 onto my new SSD. I originally had Windows 8.1 installed on the previous drive.

It's no longer activated. I've read about saying that I may need to install Windows 8.1 on to the SSD and upgrade to Windows 10 that way, but I can't find my 8.1 disk. Is there another way around this or is there any other ways for it to activated?

Also if I were to connect my old drive back and remove the SSD, would the PC still work?

Thanks.

Solution

Maybe.
Power off
Disconnect this new drive
Reconnect the original drive
Does it boot up?
If so, download and install Belarc Advisor
Run it, and it will probably discover the 8.1 license key
Write this down on a piece of paper

Power off
Swap the drives around
Use that Win 8.1 license key to activate your Win 10 install.
Assuming it works, great.
If it doesn't, time to call MS.

Activate it wiht your W8 key, or just call MS. This is assuming you have not changed motherboards.

Is there a way I can find the key without the packaging it came in as I can't find it?

A clean install with no previous license key entered WILL be 'not activated'.
As above, use your Win 8.1 license key to activate.

For 8.1, that license key would have lived on the motherboard.
You could have discovered it before installing Win 10, but maybe not now.
