LCD monitor image seems dark

I have a 9 year old 22" LCD monitor that has been working fine so far. Recently I bought a new monitor and noticed how different the displayed image is displayed on each screen. The new one is very bright and colorful in comparison to the old one - image seems much darker. I didn't notice it before because I did not have a comparison screen.

Question - has the old monitor possibly lost the image quality over time - is that a thing? Or probably some quality issues because the old one has VGA connector only. The brightness is on maximum on the old monitor.

Cold-cathode fluorescent backlights do get dimmer with age - that display probably has one.

Turn the new display down to match.

Most new displays come too bright out of the box anyway, IMHO.
