Is 1080p a bad investment?

If I am making a new system should I just go straight to 1440p or do you think that 1080p is still a reasonable resolution for PC gaming. I would just hate to buy a GPU + Monitor for 1080p and then feel as though I need to upgrade to a better GPU + Monitor a year down the line.

Save and go to 1440p , then no regrets.
