Should I upgrade to GTX 1060 from a GTX 970 (non-overclocked) for 1440p gaming?

I want to game at 1440p until I save up for 4k. I want to upgrade my GPU because I don't want to overclock. Here are my specs for my current build which is mini-ITX: i5 4690k, 8gb ddr3 ram, mini itx lga 1150 mobo, 500 watt evga psu, 1tb wd blue hdd, and corsair h60 on cpu, case: fractal design core 500 mini-itx with one fan for exhaust at the back and one at the top as intake plus AIO cooler is exhaust. My power supply is massive and I have tons of excess cables wasting space and air flow. I want to first upgrade my power supply to the Corsair SF modular mini ITX PSU for better cable management and air flow. Also should give me more compatibility options with new GPU's. However I want to game at 1440p until I can get a 4k monitor and new GPU. I really want the GTX 1060 mini probably Zotac cause I already have a zotac card. I have seen 2 on Amazon for very reasonable prices but they are out of stock. Would that suffice for 1440p gaming or should I keep my current GPU? Can it handle 1440p on ultra settings? Willing to turn down to high but don't wanna play on medium. Then I might as well stay at 1080p. Any thoughts on my current situation? Would my CPU (i5 4690k - non OC'ed) bottleneck the GTX 1060?

Many thanks in advance!!

The 980 ti is very close to the 1070 is most benchmarks I have seen, the 1070 takes a slight lead. It depends on the game but I guess a 980 ti would be viable for 4k as long as you dont need every game at max settings (I personally would much rather play at 1440p 144hz than 4k 60hz i think it looks better and has less of a performance hit). If you want a card that is going to come close to maxing every game at 4k 60fps you will need a 1080, if your willing to settle for less a 980 ti will do the job.

My vote goes for the GTX 1060. You get better driver support and the latest tech. But... If you get a great deal on a GTX 980, I would go for that rather. GTX 1060 is a very solid card for 1080p, as well as for 1440p gaming. The card will suffice your needs. :)

Is the GTX 980Ti still viable for 4k gaming? I know I will probably get 30-40 fps but is the gtx 1070 better? I know the 1080 is the card for 4k but it's too much money and you don't get a solid 60fps in all games, unrealistic to hope for I suppose but I dunno. I don't want the 980 cause I already have an old gen card unless it seriously drops in price. I have found a 1060 for as little as 230-240 pounds but they are all out of stock. Guess I will save up for a 1070 maybe or a 1080. I have seen a gtx 980Ti for 340-350 pounds and that seems like a good deal. Not sure though.

P.S. I was thinking of getting 1 gtx 980 now for 60fps at 1080p and then SLI'ing them in the future for 4k when I get a bigger rig. I transitioned to mini-ITX for college so I can only get one card but soon I will have my own place so then I can get a better PC. Would that be a good plan? Should be a price drop later on also hopefully.
